A new study released Thursday found that the top five dirtiest cities in the United States in 2023 are run by Democratic mayors, according to LawnStarter, a site that conducts and publishes geographic area studies. Two of the five cities were located in New Jersey.
LawnStarter compared more than 150 of the largest cities across the country in four categories: pollution, living conditions, infrastructure and consumer satisfaction.
Houston is led by Democratic Mayor Sylvester Turner. Not only does it rank first in the overall ranking of dirtiest cities, but it also ranks third for worst pollution, fourth for poor living conditions, twelfth for infrastructure, and thirty-fourth for consumer satisfaction. Also, Houston has bad exhaust emissions from large industrial facilities and a roach problem.
San Bernardino, in California, is led by Democratic Mayor Helen Tran. This city also received first place for worst pollution, as well as for consumer satisfaction.
Led by Democratic Mayor Mike Duggan, Detroit ranks fourth in consumer satisfaction and ninth in pollution.
Finally, Jersey City, led by Democratic mayor Steven Fulop, ranks second for poor living conditions and fifteenth for consumer satisfaction.
On the opposite side, the award for the cleanest city in the United States went to Virginia Beach, Virginia for the second year in a row. It is led by Republican Mayor Robert Dyer.
